onepharm clinical phase 2 study in periodontal disease approved by German health authority

Vienna 25. June 2009. onepharm, a Vienna-based biotech company specializing in the development of drugs for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, recently received approval from the BfArM, the German health authority, for the execution of a double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical phase 2 study in periodontal disease.

“We are all very excited about this recent success,” commented Bernhard Küenburg, onepharm´s CEO. “The approval of our phase 2 study by the German BfArM allows us to verify our concept of treating periodontitis with a new approach, targeting the local inflammation”.

Periodontitis – a new treatment regimen with an anti-inflammatory drug

Periodontitis, a destructive inflammation of the periodontal bone, is traditionally treated using mechanical procedures, namely scaling and root planing to remove bacterial plaque. This method is often supported by antibiotic treatment or by the use of disinfectants. While it is widely acknowledged that bacterial infection is one of the main causes for periodontitis, the chronic inflammatory component of the disease has recently also received increasing attention. onepharm’s new therapeutic approach is based on the anti-inflammatory properties of its lead candidate, which has proven to substantially inhibit periodontal bone loss in a ligature induced animal model.

“In this first proof of concept study we will follow clinical and inflammatory parameters over a treatment period of 6 weeks”, explains Angelika Bodenteich, onepharm’s Chief Medical Officer. With this study onepharm intends to strengthen its position in the development of effective drugs in chronic inflammatory diseases.
